I Won't Give Up," the first single from the upcoming fourth album by Jason Mraz,
begins gently with acoustic guitar, but the power of the music and the
words gradually build to a bracing statement of strength in a long-term
relationship. This turn to a very direct, emotional style once again
demonstrates Jason Mraz is one of the most talented pop
singer-songwriters active today. Old fans will be pleased, and this song
just might pull in significant amounts of new admirers.
I Won't Give Up" is a slow burning anthem to stability in long-term
relationships. What starts off in very mellow acoustic terms slowly
builds and genuinely begins to hit its stride in the middle verse.
Jason Mraz manages a grand, full sound that feels much larger than the
simple acoustic guitar and vocal arrangement would indicate. A brief
choral section helps the power of the words sink in even further. The
year has only begun and we already have what could end up one of the
most moving love songs of the year. However, "I Won't Give Up" is not
for weddings. Instead it is for those moments when partners realize the
effort is all worth it and are looking forward to a future together
that stretches to the horizon.
